Broadway Star Kristin Chenoweth Dedicates Song Tribute to Late Friend Gavin Creel
Kristin Chenoweth, renowned Broadway and screen actress, delivered an emotional performance in tribute to her late friend, Gavin Creel, a prominent figure in the theatre community. Chenoweth’s heartfelt rendition of «I Will Always Love You,» originally by Dolly Parton, aired on a recent episode of Kelly Clarkson‘s show, where she partakes in the host’s new ‘Cameo-oke’ segment.
«This song is for my friend Gavin Creel, who’s in heaven, and I miss him every day. I love you, Gavin,» Chenoweth expressed during her performance, visibly moved as she remembered her colleague and friend.
Gavin Creel passed away in October at the age of 48 after battling a rare form of sarcoma, diagnosed in July of the same year. Creel was a well-regarded staple on Broadway since his 2002 debut, best known for roles such as Jimmy Smith in «Thoroughly Modern Millie,» Hollis Bessemer in Stephen Sondheim’s «Bounce,» and Jean-Michel in the revival of «La Cage aux Folles.» His critically acclaimed portrayal of Cornelius Hackl in the 2017 revival of «Hello, Dolly!» earned him a Tony Award.
Chenoweth, reflecting on Creel’s untimely death, previously shared a poignant video from what appeared to be one of Creel’s recent performances where the two exchange affections. «I love you too, Gavin,» Chenoweth wrote, adding, «RIP my friend. You’ll be so missed. Our community loves you so much! Fly with the angels, brother!»
In addition to Chenoweth’s tribute, the Broadway and entertainment community continues to remember Creel’s contributions and vibrant talent that left an enduring impact.
