When Bryan arrived at the newly revamped sugar shack of Backwoods Maple Co., the bulk of the construction work was complete. The state-of-the-art equipment was installed, and now the focus shifted towards ensuring everything operated seamlessly. Understanding the business’ needs was crucial before delving into the aesthetic enhancements for the space.
This new sugar shack not only served as a production facility but also as a showroom for the company. With activities like bottling, cooking, and retail happening under one roof, Abbey envisioned a space that would also offer a coffee bar and a retail area for guests to enjoy. Balancing functionality and guest experience was a key aspect in the design process, resulting in a space that was both inviting and efficient.
In the maple syrup industry, trees are the lifeblood of the business. As such, it made perfect sense to incorporate the natural woods from the property into the design of the sugar shack. Every opportunity was taken to showcase the stunning natural woods found on the land, from portable birch privacy walls to timber cut countertops for syrup sampling, emphasizing the connection between the business and the environment that sustains it.
