Bryce Young’s Newfound Confidence Boosts Panthers
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young is injecting new energy into his NFL career as he leads his team to consecutive victories for the first time since being drafted. The young quarterback’s evident enjoyment of the game is reflected in his recent on-field antics, expressing his personality with gestures like mimicking a first down signal and dancing on the sidelines before a game-winning field goal.
This expressive approach and confidence will face a significant test in Sunday’s upcoming game against the reigning Super Bowl champions. «It’s just maybe being a little more expressive,» remarked Young. «I enjoy things in my own way. I know how things can look from the outside, but I’ve always enjoyed the game. I’ve always loved the game. I’ve always had fun playing.»
Young’s improved performance is attributed in large part to enhancements in the Panthers’ offensive line, which now gives him the necessary time to execute plays. The O-line’s effective run blocking has elevated the Panthers to fourth place in the NFL for rushing yards, easing the pressure on Young.
While Young has been cautious not to criticize last season’s offensive line—during which he was sacked a league-leading 62 times—it’s widely acknowledged that the line’s struggles impacted his performance. «Oh, yeah,» confirmed a Panthers wide receiver. «The offensive line has given both quarterbacks [Young and another] confidence they can sit back there and be on time, go through their reads.»
Young’s sack rate has dropped from 10% last season to 6.1% this year, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. Similarly, his pressure rate has fallen from 35% to 29.7%. The acquisition of free agent guards has notably fortified the line.
In the early part of the season, Young experienced tough games, leading to his temporary benching in favor of Dalton after defeats in the first two games. However, since reclaiming the starting position, he has only been sacked six times in three games. «They’ve been ballin’,» Young admired when discussing his offensive line. «They’ve been playing super well in all facets. I’m super grateful for them.»
The enhanced protection has encouraged more aggressive playcalling, as evidenced by Young completing 16 out of 36 passes of over 10 yards in recent weeks. Offensive coordinator Dave Canales admitted responsibility was shared, noting, «Honestly, it’s also on me, just giving him more opportunities to be able to take those looks down there.»
Despite improvements, the Panthers remain cautious, with Canales indicating that the quarterback position will continue to be evaluated weekly. Young’s statistics over the last two games include 297 passing yards and two touchdowns. «And of course, the end result, winning,» Canales remarked.
While Young’s vibrant personality on the field benefits his overall performance, he remains focused and ready for future challenges. «We’ll see,» he said about planning any more in-game dances. «I don’t really plan them out in advance.»
