Exciting news! The BPART network, a program dedicated to helping local apprentices and recent graduates in the construction industry, just won the People & Culture Award at the Constructing Excellence Southwest Awards. The ceremony took place on July 18 at Aerospace Bristol.

Since its launch in January 2023, BPART has been all about connecting young talent in the construction field. The idea is to make their training more effective while they also form valuable professional ties.

Plymouth City Council‘s Councillor Sally Cresswell praised the team behind BPART, saying it’s a fantastic achievement to receive such recognition for their innovative approach. She highlighted how BPART supports newcomers in the industry and encourages a strong network among peers.

Elijah Bennett, an apprentice with Kier Construction, expressed his pride at the award win. He mentioned how BPART has helped him navigate his early career in construction, making it less intimidating and more accessible.

Emily Gilbert, another apprentice and BPART chair, also spoke about the significant experience of attending the awards. She emphasized that BPART is crucial for those starting out in the construction world, allowing them to learn about the industry’s dynamics.

The BPART network was developed with the support of Ward Williams, which organizes educational site visits and workshops featuring leading construction employers. Topics include everything from mental health to leadership skills.

Nikki Griffiths, a partner at Ward Williams, shared her excitement at BPART’s recognition, noting it’s an essential step toward developing junior talent within the industry. She pointed out the program’s role in integrating apprentices into real-world scenarios.

Local employer Sam Morecombe from Obedair Construction actively encourages apprentices to join BPART. She believes the program’s focus on improving apprenticeship starts and retention is vital for the construction industry’s growth.

Now that Building Plymouth has won this regional accolade, they are set to compete at the national Constructing Excellence awards, which will take place on November 15, 2024, in London.
