SACRAMENTO — Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that California will invest nearly $790 million in cap-and-trade funds for 24 projects meant to increase affordable housing and enhance infrastructure across the state.

The funding will support the construction of 2,483 new, rent-restricted homes, with more than two-thirds of these homes designated for lower-income communities. This initiative is part of the state’s Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities program.

The projects will be implemented in 20 communities throughout California, including cities such as Berkeley, El Cerrito, Healdsburg, Hemet, Inglewood, King City, Livingston, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Oakland, Oceanside, Oxnard, Red Bluff, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, and Walnut Creek.

Along with the housing developments, the funding will also finance 52 new zero-emission transit vehicles, the installation of approximately 100 new bus shelters, the construction of roughly 60 miles of bikeways, and the repair and enhancement of over 60 miles of sidewalks to ensure safer and more accessible walkways.

Governor Newsom stated that these investments not only tackle the immediate need for affordable housing but also play a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in vulnerable communities. The integration of sustainable transportation with affordable housing is aimed at fostering healthier and more resilient neighborhoods.

This funding announcement marks the eighth and largest round of grants from the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities program, bringing the total investment to date to approximately $3.8 billion.
