Cam Johnson Brooklyn Nets

In a competitive matchup against the New York Knicks on Sunday, Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson emerged as a standout performer, scoring a team-high 22 points despite his team succumbing to a 114-104 defeat. Johnson displayed an impressive offensive arsenal, shooting 7-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, and was perfect from the free-throw line at 4-of-4. In addition to his scoring prowess, he contributed with five rebounds and five assists over 31 minutes of play.

While other key players like Cam Thomas and Ben Simmons had off nights offensively, Johnson’s performance was a silver lining for the Nets. This game marked the fifth instance Johnson scored at least 20 points, with four of those games occurring since the beginning of November. Despite some inconsistencies, the former North Carolina standout has averaged 18.2 points per game in nine appearances this month.

Johnson’s contributions have been significant for the Nets, especially after a challenging previous season. Following his acquisition in a trade deal involving star player Kevin Durant, and the subsequent extension of his contract for four years, expectations were high for Johnson and his former «twin» teammate Mikal Bridges. However, Bridges has since been traded to the Knicks, and questions surrounded Johnson’s ability to adapt and thrive under these new circumstances.

In the early stages of the 2024-2025 NBA season, Johnson appears to have found his rhythm, starting in the first 12 games and improving his scoring average to 16 points per game, three points more than last season. Additionally, his field goal percentage has risen to 47%, marking a career-best for the forward. Remarkably, Johnson set an NBA record by playing more than 30 minutes in seven consecutive games without committing a turnover, during which he averaged 3.4 assists per game.

Despite these advancements, Johnson has faced criticism for his three-point shooting, which has dipped, particularly in critical fourth-quarter moments, where he managed only 1-of-17 on three-point attempts. Nonetheless, his defensive efforts and enhanced playmaking capabilities have largely overshadowed his shooting woes.

As the Brooklyn Nets navigate their season, the team’s direction remains uncertain. If their performances keep them in the playoff race, the current roster may stay intact. However, as their record stood at 5-8 before facing the Knicks, a period of struggle could make the prospect of trading players appealing to the management. With Johnson under contract for up to $23 million annually for the next two seasons, he could become a valuable trade asset, potentially bringing in draft picks or other players.
