Cameron Davis Secures Dramatic Victory at PGA Tour’s Rocket Mortgage Classic
Cameron Davis clinched a thrilling victory at the PGA Tour‘s Rocket Mortgage Classic after a tense final round at the Detroit Golf Club in Michigan, edging out his competitors with a one-shot win at 18-under par.
A nail-biting twist on the 72nd hole saw Davis emerge victorious in a grueling contest. Akshay Bhatia, previously neck and neck with Davis, faltered on the final green with a rare three-putt, granting Davis his second PGA Tour title and second Rocket Mortgage Classic triumph.
Overwhelmed with emotions, Davis credited his recent success to working with a hypnotherapist to overcome a string of poor results following his T12 finish at the Masters.
Reflecting on his remarkable journey to victory, Davis tearfully expressed, «This is crazy. From where I was a couple of weeks ago to today, I’m a completely different person.»
Since his triumph at the Masters, Davis had faced challenges, with his best finish being a T38 at the Wells Fargo Championship and subsequent missed cuts at the PGA Championship and the US Open.
Davis acknowledged the support that aided his resurgence, adding, «I have so many people who have been helping me. I had a lot of support to get me out of the doldrums.»
The win marks Davis’s first since his maiden PGA Tour victory at the same event three years ago, adding a special significance to the moment. Despite a tense final hole, a crucial up-and-down from the rough secured his victory at 18 under.
Commenting on his performance, Davis shared, «I don’t wish that ending on anyone, but I did a lot of grind to get out of a hole, and to all of a sudden win… it feels pretty good.»
Aside from the $2.5 million prize, the victory guarantees Davis a spot in the season-ending Fedex Cup race and two more years of exemption on the PGA Tour.
Australian golfer Min Woo Lee also contended for his first US win but narrowly missed out after a bogey on the final hole. Lee’s strong finish tied him in second place with Bhatia, Davis Thompson, and Aaron Rai at 17-under.
