Canadian Lawmakers Urge Prosecution of Nigerian Woman for Incitement to Violence
The Nigerian House of Representatives has formally requested the Canadian government to investigate and prosecute Amaka Patience Sunnberger, a Nigerian residing in Canada, for her threatening comments directed towards Yoruba and Benin people.
The controversy began when a video clip surfaced on Tuesday, showcasing Sunnberger making inflammatory remarks during a virtual meeting on TikTok. In the video, she allegedly vowed to harm individuals from the Yoruba and Benin communities, citing grievances against the Igbo community.
A letter signed by Nigerian lawmakers Biodun Omoleye and Tochukwu Chinedu Okere expressed deep concern over Sunnberger’s statements, which they describe as a direct threat to the safety and lives of millions of Nigerians.
The letter articulated that Sunnberger’s comments constitute incitements to violence and genocide, representing violations of multiple international and Canadian laws.
In their appeal, the Nigerian lawmakers called for an immediate and thorough investigation of Sunnberger’s actions by Canadian law enforcement. They also urged for her prosecution under relevant sections of the Criminal Code of Canada for hate speech and incitement to genocide.
Furthermore, the letter called for a public condemnation of Sunnberger’s actions by the Canadian government. This step is viewed as essential in reaffirming Canada’s commitment to combatting hate speech, violence, and genocide.
The lawmakers also requested collaboration between Canadian and Nigerian authorities to prevent any potential escalation of violence and ensure justice is adequately served.
