Capital City Kayakers: A Thrilling Adventure Awaits at Crystal Lake
Before the midday heat blankets the area, Chris Lockhart, the 33-year-old founder and operator of Capital City Kayakers, is busy at Crystal Lake in Flowood. He’s unloading a collection of kayaks and equipment from a vibrant bus, readying himself for a day of guiding excursions around this picturesque oxbow lake.
In preparation for the day’s paddlers, Lockhart and his colleague, Justin Henderson, methodically disinfect each item—kayaks, life jackets, and paddles. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation as Lockhart beams with enthusiasm, eager for the arrival of the adventurous group.
The warmth of the air signifies a lovely morning, complemented by the chirping of birds, the ceaseless call of cicadas, and the faint sounds of traffic along U.S. 80 and Flowood Drive.
Lockhart reflects on the genesis of his venture, stating, «I launched Capital City Kayaks in 2014 after completing my studies at Mississippi State and returning to Jackson. Armed with a kayak, I began exploring various locations in the vicinity. My love for the outdoors stemmed from childhood adventures, whether it was roaming the neighborhood or embarking on trips to summer camp where I first tried kayaking and became instantly hooked.»
This particular outing features nine paddlers, a mix of ages and skill levels. Conversations and laughter fill the air as everyone selects their equipment—paddle, life jacket, and kayak—while Lockhart gathers them for a crucial safety briefing, providing essential paddling techniques.
Once on the tranquil waters, the group includes an apprehensive kayaker who confesses to being a non-swimmer. Curious, she asks, «What do I do if I capsize?» Prompted by her anxiety, Lockhart decides to demonstrate. He climbs out of his kayak and into the lake, reassuring her, «Just stand up! The water isn’t that deep!» Her nervousness dissipates as she paddles away with newfound confidence.
«People would often inquire about my favorite paddling spots,» Lockhart explains. «I’d suggest the Rez, Mayes Lake at LeFleur’s Bluff, and here at Crystal Lake. Many thought these places were far away, but I’d laugh and clarify that it’s all right here, just down the road. My friends also expressed interest, which encouraged me to buy an extra kayak. The enthusiasm escalated, leading me to crunch some numbers and assess the market potential.»
That analysis led to Lockhart acquiring seven kayaks, initially transported in his ’86 El Camino. As his business flourished, his mode of transportation evolved from a classic truck to three buses, now supported by a team of dedicated associates.
Lockhart highlights the composition of his clientele, noting, «The majority of my customers are Black women—approximately 70%—who frequently bring along friends, family, and partners. In places like central Mississippi, and particularly in urban areas such as Jackson, swimming skills are often lacking, which stands as the primary barrier for many. It’s a fear that keeps them from canoeing.»
«Participants often comment, ‘I’m about to board a small vessel in undetermined waters filled with wildlife. Who will rescue me?’ This common apprehension highlights the need for reassurance. I strive to mitigate those concerns by being present for my guests, guiding them from check-in to boarding, and throughout the journey, pointing out the beauty of nature along the way,» Lockhart continues.
«I reassure everyone that what’s truly dangerous is the drive to our location. On the water, you’ll find calm and peaceful conditions, a stark contrast to worries and uncertainties.»
Lockhart describes Crystal Lake as a hidden treasure nestled just a stone’s throw from downtown Jackson, ensuring that adventure seekers don’t need to travel far or out of state to experience it. «It’s fantastic! So come out and join us to explore!» he invites.
