Celebrating Friendship Day 2024 in India
Hey there! Did you know that India celebrates Friendship Day on the first Sunday of August? This year, it falls on August 4, 2024. It’s a special day to celebrate the wonderful bond we share with our friends, and it’s a little different from the International Day of Friendship, which is observed globally on July 30.
The idea of Friendship Day started way back in the US in 1935, and it was meant to honor the importance of friendship in our lives. Thanks to Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark Cards, the concept took off in the 1950s and eventually gained international recognition from the United Nations in 2011.
Even though there’s no specific history related to how India began celebrating it, holding it on the first Sunday makes it easier for friends to gather since many people have the day off. Plus, it’s nice to enjoy some outdoor fun during the summer!
On this day, folks usually reflect on their friendships, spend quality time together, and even exchange gifts. You might want to plan a meaningful surprise for your pals or get those creative juices flowing with some handmade presents. Cooking for each other or going out to your favorite restaurant to relive those precious memories is a fantastic idea too!
And if some of your friends live far away, don’t fret! You can always set up a Zoom call to catch up, or even plan a short getaway to bond and unwind together.
Not only that, but Indian mythology is rich with tales of inspiring friendships. For example, the bond between Lord Krishna and Sudama is celebrated for its depth, despite their differing social statuses. Then there’s Lord Rama and Sugriva, who became friends during a tough time, and Karna’s friendship with Duryodhana, which had its own unique twists and turns.
These stories remind us of how significant friendships can be in our lives, highlighting support, loyalty, and compassion. So, as you gear up to celebrate, think about how you can embrace those values with your own friends!
