Celebrating International Tiger Day: A Call for Action
Every year on July 29th, people around the globe come together to observe International Tiger Day, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the need to protect tigers from the brink of extinction.
This special day was established at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit back in 2010, after it was discovered that tiger populations had plummeted by an astounding 97% over the past century. At that time, only about 3,200 wild tigers were left.
The situation of these majestic creatures is dire, and International Tiger Day aims to shed light on the importance of conservation efforts. Factors contributing to the declining tiger population include habitat loss, climate change, hunting, and poaching.
In a move to celebrate this important day, Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel (AMNS) India Ltd adopted a white tiger named ‘Balu’ at the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam. D.S. Varma from AMNS handed over a cheque of ₹1.90 lakh towards the adoption costs for a year.
The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, spread across 625 acres, is a significant facility for the conservation of endangered species in the Eastern Ghats. It houses around 920 animals and 90 species of birds.
AMNS India Ltd is also committed to sustainability and has installed 300 kw solar power at various public institutions including KGH and Victoria Government Hospital in the city. Plans are in place for another 30 kw solar power unit at the Biodiversity Park in Madhurawada.
Moreover, AMNS India has been actively engaged in raising environmental awareness through programs for students and has undertaken the impressive task of planting one lakh trees in Visakhapatnam.
