Celebrating Teachers’ Day in India: A Tribute to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
Teachers' Day is observed annually on September 5 across India, commemorating the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was the first Vice President and the second President of India.
Dr. Radhakrishnan was a renowned scholar and educator, recognized for his contributions to education and philosophy. In 1954, he received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, and he was awarded honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.
The tradition of celebrating Teachers’ Day began in 1962 when Dr. Radhakrishnan, after assuming the presidency, suggested that his birthday should be devoted to honoring teachers. This occasion has since become a day for paying tribute to educators and their significant role in shaping the future of students.
Schools and educational institutions across the country participate in various events on this day, acknowledging the hard work and dedication of teachers. Students express their gratitude through heartfelt messages, gifts, and performances.
In recognition of the importance of teaching, various quotes reflect the nobility and impact of educators. Notably, APJ Abdul Kalam stated, “Teaching is a very noble profession that shapes the character, caliber, and future of an individual.” Other prominent figures, such as Mahatma Gandhi and Bill Gates, have also emphasized the crucial role of teachers in society.
