Throughout March, Real Roots Radio featured a special Women’s History Spotlight segment on The Daniel Mullins Midday Music Spectacular, celebrating influential women in country, bluegrass, and roots music. The initiative aimed to honor the musical contributions of legends such as Elizabeth Cotten, Patty Loveless, Ola Belle Reed, Alison Krauss, and Loretta Lynn.

Elizabeth Cotten, a North Carolina native born in 1893, made a profound impact on American roots music. Her unique guitar-playing style, discovered later in life through a chance encounter with the Seeger family, led to iconic songs like ‘Freight Train’ and ‘Shake Sugaree.’

Patty Loveless, hailing from Elkhorn City, Kentucky, and recently inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, played a pivotal role in the new traditionalist country movement of the ’80s and ’90s. Her hits like ‘Timber, I’m Falling In Love’ and ‘You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive’ showcased her mountain soul.

Ola Belle Reed, known for her clawhammer banjo skills, brought Appalachian music to wider audiences in the mid-20th century. Her compositions like ‘High On A Mountain’ and ‘You Led Me To The Wrong’ remain timeless classics in the roots music genre.

Alison Krauss, with 27 Grammy Awards to her name, is renowned for her ethereal vocals that transcend genres. A member of the Grand Ole Opry and the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, Krauss’s collaborations with artists like Brad Paisley have further solidified her place in music history.

Loretta Lynn, the trailblazing Queen of Country Music, fearlessly explored women’s issues through hits like ‘The Pill’ and ‘Fist City.’ Her candid storytelling, rooted in her Kentucky upbringing in Butcher Hollow, resonated with audiences and cemented her legacy as a country music icon.

Real Roots Radio’s dedication to spotlighting these remarkable women throughout March underscores the pivotal roles they played in shaping the landscape of roots music. By honoring their legacies, the initiative not only celebrates their contributions but also shines a light on the ongoing influence of female artists in the industry.
