Celtic are on the verge of securing a remarkable deal for Denmark star Kasper Schmeichel as they aim to bolster their goalkeeping options following the departure of Fraser Forster.

The search for a new goalkeeper has been intense since Forster’s exit, leaving just Scott Bain and Conor Hazard as the only senior goalkeepers at the club.

After a recent pre-season match against Ayr, manager Rodgers hinted at the potential acquisition of Schmeichel, praising the experienced goalkeeper’s abilities without confirming the negotiations.

Schmeichel, who notably featured in all of Denmark’s matches at the European Championship, is now close to joining Celtic, marking his return to Scotland after a loan spell at Falkirk from Manchester City over a decade ago.

Rodgers is also looking to secure a younger goalkeeper as backup, with Benjamin Siegrist likely to depart the club.

Initially linked with a move for Aberdeen‘s Joe Lewis, Celtic appear to have turned to their manager’s extensive network to engage in talks with Schmeichel.

The potential transfer is reportedly in advanced stages, awaiting final contractual details to be resolved before completion.

Schmeichel, aged 37, recently left Leicester City and went on to feature for Nice and Rennes. However, his contract at the Belgian side concluded at the end of the previous season, allowing him to explore opportunities elsewhere.

The proposed deal with Celtic is rumored to span one year initially, with an option for an extension for an additional year, ensuring stability in the goalkeeping department.

The experienced goalkeeper was also courted by a move to America following his stint with Nice but opted for a switch to Belgium instead.

Having tasted success with Leicester in the Premier League and the FA Cup, including a title under Rodgers’ guidance, Schmeichel brings a wealth of experience to Parkhead.

With over a century of appearances for Denmark and a standout performance at the Euro 2020, where Denmark reached the last 16, Schmeichel’s arrival at Celtic is poised to provide a significant boost to the squad.

Rodgers emphasizes the urgency to finalize deals before the forthcoming season kicks off, indicating a desire to strengthen the team promptly and efficiently for the upcoming campaign.
