Chad Michael Murray Stars in Netflix’s ‘The Merry Gentleman’ Amid New Personal Priorities
NEW YORK — Chad Michael Murray, known for his iconic roles in early 2000s television dramas, is starring in Netflix‘s latest holiday movie, «The Merry Gentleman.» The film is described as a «Magic Mike«-meets-mistletoe venture where Murray takes on the role of Luke, a contractor-turned-dancer embroiled in a romantic storyline with protagonist Ashley, portrayed by Britt Robertson. «When you say Christmas, the first thing that typically comes to your mind isn’t strippers,» Murray quipped while discussing the film over a Zoom call from the Plaza Hotel in New York City.
Although appearing shirtless multiple times is par for the course in this film—estimated by Murray to be at least nine times—it was the dancing that posed a greater challenge for the actor. Murray underwent extensive dance training across various genres, including country western and hip-hop, in preparation for the role. «It’s not that I don’t dance,» he said, «I do, but at home and at weddings.» Yet, the intense dance rehearsals resulted in what Murray described as a «dopamine hit,» revealing a newfound love for dance.
Murray’s latest character shares a name with several of his previous ones, including his role in «Mother of the Bride.» This was a deliberate choice by Murray, who is a practicing Christian and finds personal significance in the name Luke, meaning «light.» He explained, «That’s one of my main goals as an actor, to bring light to people’s life, enjoyment, and entertainment, a departure, an escape from the mundane realities of day-to-day life.»
Reflecting on his upbringing in Buffalo, New York, Murray shared how television served as an escape from financial struggles he faced growing up with five siblings. A twist of fate during a lengthy hospital stay at the age of 15 led to a modeling suggestion from his nurse, which eventually pivoted into an acting career. By 18, Murray had moved to Los Angeles, modeling for brands like Skechers and Tommy Hilfiger and landing roles on «Gilmore Girls» and «Dawson’s Creek.»
After years of balancing fame and personal life in the early 2000s, notably during his tenure on «One Tree Hill,» Murray acknowledges a lack of guidance on managing public attention and the associated pressures. «There’s no playbook,» he reflected. Now, his focus has shifted to family life with his wife, actor Sarah Roemer, and their three children. «I want to be a dad but still work and service everybody else and help people make a great show,» he explained.
This shift in priorities influences his choice of roles, such as those in holiday films like «The Merry Gentleman.» Murray’s involvement in family-centric projects allows him to travel with his family during filming, highlighting the importance of togetherness. «They’re here in New York with me right now,» he shared.
Looking toward the future, Murray is open to a variety of roles, with a particular interest in projects that allow for creative interpretation, such as independent films or psychological thrillers. However, the opportunity to work with esteemed actors such as Meryl Streep remains enticing for him. While his professional future remains undefined, Murray embraces this uncertainty with enthusiasm. «I truly feel like I’m just getting started,» he concluded.
