In a recent announcement, Chancellor Rachel Reeves revealed that pensioners who do not receive pension credit will no longer be eligible for the winter fuel payment. This change is aimed specifically at low-income households.

During a press conference, Reeves acknowledged the difficult decision she had to make, stating, «This is not a decision I wanted to make, nor is it the one I expected to make – but these are the necessary and urgent decisions that I must make.» The winter fuel payment will still be available to those receiving pension credit.

Reeves emphasized that the level of overspending by the previous government is unsustainable and poses a risk to economic stability. She highlighted the need for further in-year savings and indicated that the government is committed to maintaining the triple-lock on pensions.

Reeves faced criticism over the prioritization of a significant pay rise for junior doctors while cutting benefits for pensioners. In response to queries, she defended the move: «It is important to settle the junior doctors’ pay strike,» she said.

The charity Age UK voiced strong opposition to this decision, predicting that as many as two million pensioners who desperately need financial assistance will not receive the winter fuel payment. Caroline Abrahams, the charity’s director, labeled it a social injustice.

As the press conference continued, Reeves was asked about potential tax raises in the upcoming autumn budget, but she sidestepped the question, restating her commitment not to raise taxes on working people.

Reactions to Reeves’ announcement varied, with the Institute for Fiscal Studies expressing a mix of frustration and understanding regarding the budgetary challenges faced by the government. Meanwhile, opponents from the Liberal Democrats and the SNP criticized the cuts as reminiscent of past austerity measures.

In addition to addressing pensions, it was announced that senior civil servants will receive a 5% pay rise, a point that further sparked debate in Parliament.
