Chandipura Virus Outbreak in Gujarat: Symptoms, Causes, and Precautions
Health authorities in Gujarat are on high alert as nine cases of Chandipura Virus have been recently reported in various districts of the state. The Chandipura Virus, belonging to the Vesiculovirus genus of the Rhabdoviridae family, is known to cause symptoms resembling flu-like fever and acute encephalitis.
Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel has reassured the public, stating that while there is no cause for panic, caution is essential. He emphasized that the Chandipura Virus is not a new pathogen, with its first case registered in Maharashtra back in 1965. Moreover, yearly cases of this virus are not uncommon in Gujarat.
This virus is primarily transmitted through vector-infected sandflies, mosquitoes, and ticks. It predominantly affects children between the ages of 9 months and 14 years, with symptoms including fever, vomiting, loose motion, and headache. Individuals exhibiting these symptoms are advised to seek medical attention promptly.
As of now, Gujarat has witnessed a total of nine Chandipura Virus cases across four districts, including three cases of individuals from other states residing in the state. While six deaths have been reported, their direct link to the Chandipura Virus remains unconfirmed at this time.
Recent reports from PTI highlighted a concerning situation in Sabarkantha, where four children succumbed to the suspected Chandipura Virus, while two others are currently under treatment at the civil hospital in Himmatnagar, the district’s administrative center.
