Changes Announced for Disney’s Hollywood Studios: MuppetVision 3D to Close, New Muppet-Themed Roller Coaster
In a significant development for theme park enthusiasts, Walt Disney World has announced the permanent closure of MuppetVision 3D at Disney‘s Hollywood Studios. The attraction, which has been a signature feature of the park since its opening on May 16, 1991, will close to make way for a new «Monsters, Inc.» themed area, as revealed at Disney’s D23 Expo.
The closure of MuppetVision 3D marks the end of an era as the attraction was the last project that Jim Henson was involved in before his untimely death in 1990. Disney has stated that they are «having creative conversations and exploring ways to preserve the film and other parts of the experience for fans to enjoy in the future.» However, there is no assurance that the film will be featured in an attraction setting again.
Meanwhile, the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, previously themed around the band Aerosmith, will undergo a transformation to incorporate the beloved Muppets. Disney spokespersons have suggested that «music’s biggest stars» will be featured in a «rockin’ music festival.» The attraction’s poster includes popular Muppets characters like Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, hinting at a comprehensive inclusion of the Muppets in the rebranding.
This new development means the Grand Avenue area, MuppetVision’s current location, will transform into Monstropolis, inspired by «Monsters, Inc.» Along with the roller coaster, the new land will include themed dining and shopping experiences. Notably, Harryhausen’s, the sushi restaurant from «Monsters, Inc.,» is expected to replace existing facilities, according to concept art.
The Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster’s reimagining will also include the takeover of the Rock Around the Shop gift store by the Muppets, providing another venue for Muppet-themed merchandise, which the park has lacked since the closure of the Stage 1 Company Store in 2020.
Furthermore, the Disneyland Paris counterpart of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, which closed in 2019, might see a similar transformation. The Walt Disney World attraction’s future had been under scrutiny, particularly following allegations against Aerosmith’s frontman, Steven Tyler, in 2022.
While no specific closing date has been announced for either MuppetVision 3D or the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Disney has assured guests that there will be «enough time to catch a super-stretch limo to the Forum» to experience both attractions before their refurbishment. As these changes unfold, more detailed information is expected to be shared in the coming year.
