Charlotte Hornets Await the Return of Key Big Men
The Charlotte Hornets have managed to navigate the challenges of competing in the NBA with an undersized lineup, but their struggles with size may soon be alleviated. According to Hornets PR, strides are being made in the recovery of two key players, Nick Richards and Mark Williams, who are progressing in their respective return-to-play programs.
Nick Richards, a former standout from the University of Kentucky, had bolstered his team with impressive performances, including three consecutive double-doubles. His last appearance saw him achieve a career-best, scoring 24 points and securing 12 rebounds. Unfortunately, his streak was interrupted due to a rib injury sustained during a November 11 game against the Boston Celtics. Since then, Richards has been sidelined but is now entering the next stage of his rehabilitation, as confirmed by the team.
Mark Williams, a Duke University alumnus and a former first-round pick, has been absent from the NBA court for nearly a year. His 2023-24 season was cut short by a back injury, and a subsequent foot injury during training camp has delayed his return in the 2024-25 season. Williams currently holds the record for the longest missed games streak among active players, but indications suggest that his return is imminent. Head coach Charles Lee has noted that Williams has been participating in individual drills during practices, and his integration back into team activities is now underway.
The potential return of Richards and Williams is expected to significantly bolster Charlotte’s defense. The team has struggled with size, and reinserting a seven-footer into the lineup would address some of these challenges. Despite the height disadvantage, Charles Lee’s team has consistently played with remarkable effort and intensity, although there is only so much they can do against physically larger teams.
In the interim, players such as Grant Williams and Moussa Diabaté have filled crucial roles in the Hornets’ frontcourt during the absences of Richards and Williams. Their contributions have been vital, but with Richards and Williams returning, their responsibilities are likely to evolve. Grant Williams is anticipated to take on a reserve role, supporting both Miles Bridges and the central position, while Diabaté is expected to continue providing solid minutes off the bench.
