Chiefs Face Receiver Shake-Up After Injury
The Kansas City Chiefs are facing some changes in their wide receiver lineup after their projected No. 1 receiver, Brown, suffered an injury in the first preseason game of 2024. Head coach Andy Reid mentioned that Brown will need to «miss some time,” which raises a few questions about the team’s plans moving forward.
With Brown sidelined, the Chiefs currently have some key players like Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Justin Watson who seem to be safe bets for the roster. However, there could still be a possibility that Rice faces suspension from the league. As the season draws near, the Chiefs are navigating their options, especially since they have to keep Brown on the initial active roster while he heals.
Brown’s absence may actually secure a spot for veteran receiver Mecole Hardman, who is back with the Chiefs after a stint with the New York Jets. Hardman’s versatility means he could fill in for Brown’s position and offer some stability that younger receivers like Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney, and Justyn Ross have struggled to provide after facing injuries and inconsistent performances.
There’s also been some chatter about a possible reunion with Smith-Schuster, who had a successful stint with the Chiefs before joining the New England Patriots. Although his time with the Patriots was marked by injuries, he showed he could deliver significant performances when healthy. The Chiefs could take a low-risk chance on him due to his previous connection with the team.
If the Chiefs decide to go after Smith-Schuster, it could mean releasing one of their younger guys like Moore, Toney, or Ross, but it seems they might be inclined to stick with their current roster for now. However, if Rice gets suspended and Smith-Schuster is still available, that could change things quickly.
