In an exciting match at Wembley, Manchester City triumphed over Manchester United to win the 2024 FA Community Shield. After a nail-biting penalty shootout ended 7-6, City ended their streak of losses in this annual showdown, tasting victory for the first time since 2019.

The game saw a thrilling back-and-forth, starting with United taking the lead in the 82nd minute. Alejandro Garnacho, coming off the bench, put United ahead with a brilliant goal that sent their fans into a frenzy.

But just when it seemed City would face defeat, Bernardo Silva joined the match late and managed to equalize with a powerful header in the 89th minute, thanks to a wonderful cross from Oscar Bobb.

With the score tied at 1-1, the match headed to penalties for the fourth time in six seasons. Jonny Evans‘ missed penalty gave City a chance to claim the trophy, and Manuel Akanji stepped up to convert the decisive kick.

City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, expressed satisfaction with the win, especially after the difficult starts of their previous seasons in this contest. He praised his team’s efforts despite some early struggles during the match.

Meanwhile, United’s coach, Erik ten Hag, reflected on the positives from the game despite the loss. He was proud of how his team matched City and created several chances throughout the match.

This victory provides a strong start for City as they head into the new season, with high hopes for more silverware in the 2024/25 campaign.
