Club Supports Izak Rankine After Racial Abuse Incident
The Adelaide Football Club has expressed its strong backing for player Izak Rankine following a disturbing incident where he was subjected to a racial slur by a member of the Brisbane Lions.
The Club is currently providing assistance to Rankine after he was racially targeted on social media by a supporter of the Lions on Sunday, during the game that took place at a critical time – NAIDOC Week, a period dedicated to celebrating Indigenous culture.
In the last 24 hours, the Crows have been in communication with both the AFL’s Integrity Department and the Lions, who have promptly revoked the membership of the individual responsible for the racial abuse.
CEO Tim Silvers of the Crows acknowledged the Lions’ swift action as a potent message that such behavior is absolutely intolerable, emphasizing the frustration that such incidents still occur.
Silvers stated, “There is no place for racism of any kind in society, and it is extremely sad and disappointing that we find ourselves dealing with yet another abhorrent attack on one of our players.»
“As an industry, we have a collective responsibility to not only call out racism but do everything we can to eradicate it, and we support Brisbane which has acted swiftly and decisively,” Silvers added.
«It is also important we take the time to understand the hurt this behaviour causes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people because unfortunately, despite how far we have come in this space, the message is still not getting through.»
The Club pledged ongoing support to Izak Rankine and his family, determining to combat racism within the football context and the broader community.
