Lord Coe has hinted that he might run for the presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) once Thomas Bach steps down in 2025. While he hasn’t officially declared his candidacy, Coe acknowledged that he would certainly reflect on the opportunity.

Bach, who has been in office since 2013, announced recently that he would not seek an extension after his current term ends. He believes the IOC would benefit from new leadership moving forward.

Speaking in Paris, celebrating his 40th anniversary since winning gold in the 1500 meters at the Los Angeles Olympics, Coe expressed his long-standing connection to the Olympic movement. He recalled his extensive experience, from competing in the games to organizing major Olympic events.

Coe, now in his third term as president of World Athletics, emphasized the importance of having multiple candidates for the role. He said, “I would encourage others to consider running, as having a variety of qualified candidates is crucial.”

The next IOC president will be elected in March 2025 during a meeting in Greece. Coe reiterated the need for a strong governance structure and a clear focus on the future of the Olympic movement.

Reflecting on the challenges of defining policies for the inclusion of transgender athletes, Coe stated that clear communication is essential. He pointed out the importance of preserving categories within sports while acknowledging the complexities involved.
