Collingwood Player Josh Carmichael Retires from AFL Due to Concussion Symptoms
Collingwood player Josh Carmichael has officially announced his retirement from Australian football due to ongoing concussion symptoms, affecting his health and career.
The 24-year-old athlete, known for his brief but impactful tenure with Collingwood, has unfortunately been experiencing persistent concussion effects since a head injury sustained during a Round Six VFL match against the Southport Sharks in May.
Despite dedicated medical attention and support, including a recent evaluation by the Independent Medical Panel designated by the AFL, it was strongly recommended that Carmichael step away from contact sports for his well-being.
Expressing his gratitude and reflection on his time at Collingwood, Carmichael cited the importance of prioritizing his long-term health over his football career.
Having transitioned from West Adelaide in the SANFL to Collingwood through the 2022 Mid-Season Draft, Carmichael showcased his skills and dedication on the field, amassing eight AFL games during his time with the Magpies.
Collingwood’s GM of Football, Brendon Bolton, extended his thanks to Carmichael for his contributions to the club, praising the player’s strength and maturity in navigating this challenging period.
As part of the competitive AFL world, Carmichael joins a growing list of athletes, including Nathan Murphy, Angus Brayshaw, and Aiden O’Driscoll, who have had to retire due to the impact of concussion on their health and future prospects.
