Columbus Crew Triumphs in 2024 Leagues Cup Final
The Columbus Crew has emerged victorious in the 2024 Leagues Cup Final, defeating Los Angeles FC with a score of 3-1, thanks to an outstanding performance from striker Cucho Hernandez who contributed two goals and one assist.
Hernandez opened the scoring for Columbus in the first half, netting a goal with a powerful header from a cross by Mo Farsi right at the 45-minute mark. Columbus maintained the lead until the 57th minute when Olivier Giroud scored his first goal for LAFC, leveling the match at 1-1 off a corner kick.
With the score still tied after 90 minutes, the match entered stoppage time. Less than two minutes into additional time, Hernandez struck again, reclaiming the lead for the Crew with a remarkable shot from just outside LAFC’s box.
In the final moments of the match, Hernandez assisted Jacen Russell-Rowe who secured the Crew’s third goal, effectively sealing the victory. This win marks the Crew’s second title in under a year, following their MLS Cup victory in December 2023.
The match was played in front of a sellout crowd of 20,190 at Lower.com Field, a fitting atmosphere for a decisive final. Columbus displayed strong possession with 66% of the ball during the first half and executed multiple attempts on goal compared to LAFC’s attacking efforts.
LAFC made several substitutions throughout the game, including taking Giroud out for Kei Kamara, however, they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities, with Cristian Olivera missing a key shot that could have shifted momentum in their favor.
In a tactical shift, LAFC’s coach Steve Cherundolo had implemented a new formation that, although aggressive, did not yield the anticipated results against a well-organized Crew side.
As both teams look ahead, this match serves as a pivotal moment in the Columbus Crew’s growing legacy within American soccer.
