Community Collaboration Saves St. Jean Baptiste Day Celebrations in North Bay

The St. Jean Baptiste Day celebration organized by Les Compagnons des francs loisirs faced a venue change due to impending bad weather in North Bay.

St. Jean Baptiste, a revered figure in the Bible, is commemorated as a patron of Francophones worldwide, with a rich cultural significance revolving around music and family activities.

Joel Ducharme, a spokesperson for Les Compagnons, highlighted the essence of the festivities.

Les Compagnons, hosting the event for over 60 years, shared this year’s celebrations with the Ukrainian Club, discovering a common tradition.

The Ukrainian Club’s participation included a traditional act where young individuals jumped over fire to purify their souls.

The original event location at the Kiwanis Bandshell was shifted to Northgate Shopping Centre to avert cancellation risks posed by unfavorable conditions.

Anne Brule, the project manager at Les Compagnons, expressed gratitude to Northgate Shopping Centre for their timely support in relocating the event.

Despite the venue change, the event retained its festive spirit, although some activities like the barbecue and bouncy castle had to be forgone.

The celebrations spanned across both mall courts and a pop-up location, offering a range of family-friendly activities.

The event featured stilt walkers, musicians, singers, make-your-own juggling ball stations, mascot appearances, and games with prizes.

The community event also included popcorn and cotton candy machines for attendees to savor.

Dignitaries like Nipissing-Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota and North Bay Mayor Peter Chirico delivered speeches, acknowledging the French community’s significant contributions in the region.

Anne Brule expressed immense satisfaction at the collaborative efforts that made the event a success, emphasizing the unity of the community in orchestrating the celebrations.
