Residents in Moorton are expressing frustration over what they perceive as a lack of police action in tackling crime, despite a recent drug bust by the Metro Police drug team that resulted in the arrest of an alleged drug dealer operating near the SAPS Training College.

The community’s discontent has escalated, with demands for more proactive law enforcement measures to address the various crime challenges affecting the closely-knit neighborhood.

According to Durban Metro Police spokesperson, Col Boysie Zungu, the operation was initiated following information from Crime Intelligence about drug dealing activities behind the SAPS Training College within an informal settlement.

Col Zungu explained that the Metro Police drug team, in collaboration with SAPS eThekwini District EITT and other entities including PT Alarms Durban ambassador Fenton Govender, strategically observed the suspect and formulated a plan to apprehend him.

The operation, conducted in the early hours of the morning due to settlement activity, led to the apprehension of the target at his residence. The suspect was found with an unlicensed firearm and a significant quantity of drugs, including heroin capsules, which were seized and handed over to Chatsworth SAPS.

Commending the Metro drug team and all involved parties for their efforts, Col Zungu highlighted the successful nature of the operation. Despite this achievement, long-time resident Ricky Naicker expressed astonishment at the proximity of such crimes to his home, emphasizing the need for enhanced police presence and action.

Naicker raised concerns about criminal activities occurring in such close proximity to the SAPS Training College, and urged for more proactive measures to combat crime in areas like Lusaka. He stressed the importance of safeguarding the community, especially children who are exposed to such illicit activities.
