Comoros Red Crescent Strengthens Its Role in Humanitarian Aid
The Comoros Red Crescent, a vital player in the country’s humanitarian efforts, has grown significantly since its establishment in 1982. Recognized as an auxiliary to public authorities in humanitarian work in 1985, this organization joined the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in 2005.
Based in the capital city of Moroni, the Comoros Red Crescent boasts three regional branches located on the islands of Ngazidja, Ndzwani, and Mwali. These branches oversee local committees and coordinate emergency responses across the islands.
With about 3,000 volunteers working tirelessly at the village level, the Comoros Red Crescent is at the front line in disaster and emergency situations, collaborating closely with the Civil Protection Agency.
Since building a warehouse in 2013, thanks to support from the French Agency for Development, the organization now has a storage capacity of 80 tonnes for relief supplies. This has significantly bolstered its ability to respond swiftly in crisis situations.
The organization’s priorities focus on developing its capabilities, enhancing the health of vulnerable communities through community-based health programs, managing disaster risks, and spreading awareness about humanitarian laws and values.
Particularly active in community health, the Comoros Red Crescent promotes essential hygiene practices to prevent outbreaks of diseases like malaria and cholera. This initiative is part of its collaboration with health authorities to ensure healthier communities.
Additionally, their disaster risk management efforts include assessing vulnerabilities at the community level to build resilience against future disasters.
<p.In 2022, the Comoros Red Crescent made a significant impact, reaching over 316,000 individuals through its disaster response and early recovery programs.
