Congress Leader Jairam Ramesh Responds to Election Commission on Amit Shah Claim
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has submitted his response to the Election Commission following the commission’s request for evidence regarding his claim against Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The Election Commission had sought proof from Ramesh after he alleged that Amit Shah tried to influence District Magistrates and Collectors in around 150 Parliamentary Constituencies.
Ramesh, in his letter to the Election Commission, expressed concerns that revealing certain sensitive information could compromise his sources, exposing them to potential backlash from authorities. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the Constitution, a duty shared by the Election Commission.
The Election Commission had asked Ramesh to provide details supporting his claims of attempts to influence officials ahead of the Lok Sabha election vote counting. Despite Ramesh’s initial request for a week’s extension to gather and present the evidence, the Commission set a deadline for him to respond, citing the seriousness of his allegations and their impact on the electoral process.
In his communication, Ramesh also criticized the Election Commission for what he perceived as double standards in addressing violations of the Model Code of Conduct. He questioned why no action was taken against BJP leaders for similar infractions.
Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar dismissed Ramesh’s allegations as baseless during a press briefing, urging against spreading rumors and casting doubt on the electoral process. The Election Commission’s firm stance indicates a strict approach towards unsubstantiated claims during critical electoral phases.
