Connecticut Republican Party Chair Criticizes Vice President Harris on Qualifications and Democratic Succession Talks
The head of the Connecticut Republican Party, Ben Proto, has publicly criticized Vice President Kamala Harris, stating that her qualifications for both the presidency and vice presidency of the United States are insufficient. Proto attributed Harris’ selection to what he termed as gender and racial politics within the Democratic party.
Proto’s remarks come amidst increasing calls from some Democrats for President Joe Biden to step down from running for reelection. The GOP chair expressed concerns over Harris potentially assuming the presidency, suggesting it worries people more than Biden being in office.
Jason Stanley, a prominent scholar, interpreted Proto’s comments as part of a broader campaign against diversity, equity, and inclusion, emphasizing the underlying theme that Black individuals and women lack competency.
Stanley cited a recent incident involving Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, who faced derogatory remarks online after a specific event, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by people of color in public office.
During the discussion, Proto also questioned Harris’ capability to lead by referencing her response style, including what he perceived as giggling when asked questions. Stanley noted that this type of critique, which he termed ‘infantilizing,’ is commonly directed at women and Black individuals in politics.
Patty McQueen, a spokesperson for Connecticut Democrats, condemned Proto’s remarks, labeling them as misogynistic and likening them to what she described as ‘DEI dog-whistles.’ McQueen pointed out the problematic nature of such statements, especially following the recent attempt on former President Donald Trump‘s life.
The rhetoric surrounding Harris stands in contrast to the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Proto stated efforts were made to maintain a positive, upbeat atmosphere focused on supporting President Trump. This initiative aligns with calls by President Biden to lower political discourse’s temperature in the aftermath of heightened tensions.
