Controversy Erupts Over Nigeria’s National Anthem Change
Controversy has erupted in Nigeria following the recent decision by President Bola Tinubu to change the national anthem back to its old version, which was originally composed by Lillian Jean Williams and Frances Berda in 1959.
The move to revert to the old anthem, ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee,’ has sparked outrage among many Nigerians who believe that more pressing issues such as insecurity, inflation, and economic challenges should take precedence.
Online reactions have been critical, with some expressing disappointment in the rushed nature of the decision by the National Assembly, while others, like former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili, have vowed to continue singing the previous anthem, ‘Arise O Compatriots.’
Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad added a twist to the debate by suggesting that there may be calls for changing not just the anthem but also the name of the country and the national flag.
Despite the backlash, Tahir Mongunu, chairman of the parliamentary committee behind the anthem change, defended the decision, stating that it will foster patriotism, unity, and promote cultural heritage.
On the ground in Kano, resident Habu Shamsu offered a different perspective, expressing appreciation for the new-old anthem and its inclusive nature.
