Controversy Surrounds Appointment of Pro-Tem Speaker in 18th Lok Sabha Session
Lieutenant-Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan recently visited New Delhi to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. The purpose of his visit was to discuss developmental plans for Puducherry.
Radhakrishnan, who assumed office as the Lieutenant-Governor of Puducherry earlier this year, was given the additional responsibility as the Governor of Telangana following Tamilisai Soundararajan‘s resignation.
On the political front, the 18th Lok Sabha session commenced today with the swearing-in of newly elected members, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Opposition is gearing up to challenge the government on various issues like the Speaker election and allegations of irregularities in exams like NEET-UG and UGC-NET.
President Droupadi Murmu appointed Bhartruhari Mahtab as the Lok Sabha pro-tem Speaker, a decision that faced criticism from the Congress party for not selecting K Suresh for the role.
Adding fuel to the controversy, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi voiced their support for students affected by the alleged exam irregularities and questioned the government’s decisions.
The Samajwadi Party, under the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav, is also set to hold a parliamentary meeting in Delhi to strategize its approach in the ongoing session.
Looking ahead, the Lok Sabha speaker election is scheduled for June 26, and President Droupadi Murmu will address both Houses on June 27 to outline the government’s agenda.
The session, expected to run until July 3, marks the first sitting of the 18th Lok Sabha following the general elections, setting the stage for intense debates and deliberations on key national issues.
