Costco Issues Recall of Butter Croissants Due to Contaminated Salt
Costco has announced a recall of its Butter Croissants due to possible contamination with foreign materials. The recall was made public on November 9, 2024, after it was discovered that the salt used to make the croissants was contaminated. The company has not specified what the foreign material is, and the salt’s manufacturer, Compass Minerals, has not issued a statement.
The recall affects all Butter Croissants sold at Costco locations nationwide in the United States. These croissants bear the item number 1199652 and have best-by dates ranging from September 8, 2024, to November 10, 2024. Customers who have purchased these croissants are advised not to eat them and to return them to their local Costco store for a full refund.
This recall follows a series of similar issues in Canada where products manufactured with salt from Compass Minerals’ Canadian subsidiary, Compass Minerals Canada Corp., were also found to be contaminated. In October 2024, the recall in Canada involved the Sifto brand salt, which was discovered to contain metal pieces, leading to a wide-ranging recall of breads, buns, and other products.
Costco has not connected the U.S. recall to the Canadian incidents, and there have been no reported adverse effects from consuming the croissants in the United States. Customers with inquiries about the recall can contact Costco’s customer service at 1-800-955-2292 for assistance.
