Couche-Tard Eyes 7-Eleven Purchase
In some big news this Monday, the Canadian company Alimentation Couche-Tard has made a move to acquire 7-Eleven. This announcement came from the parent company of 7-Eleven, Seven & i Holdings, which is based in Japan.
They mentioned that they have set up a special committee to look into the purchase proposal. However, they haven’t made any decisions yet on whether to accept or reject Couche-Tard’s offer.
Couche-Tard, in a response, confirmed they sent a friendly and non-binding proposal over to Seven & i Holdings. They are hoping to reach a deal that would benefit everyone involved, including customers and employees.
At this point, it’s important to note that there are no guarantees that a deal will actually happen.
For a bit of context, Seven & i Holdings operates around 86,000 stores worldwide, with about a quarter of those located in Japan. In contrast, Couche-Tard runs about 17,000 stores, including those under the Circle K brand.
Interestingly, after the news broke, the stock price of Seven & i jumped by 23% on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, signaling investor interest.
Additionally, Couche-Tard announced they acquired 270 GetGo Café + Markets locations from the Giant Eagle supermarket chain. These stores are located across several states including Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Maryland.
