Cristiano Ronaldo fans have flooded BBC Sport‘s Instagram page with memes and angry comments following a controversial caption during Euros coverage.

The incident occurred after a BBC Sport video featured football star Cristiano Ronaldo, with the caption ‘Misstiano Penaldo,’ sparking outrage among his followers.

He missed a crucial penalty during the match against Slovenia but redeemed himself later, scoring in the shoot-out to lead Portugal to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

John Terry, former England captain, criticized the BBC for what he deemed a disrespectful portrayal of Ronaldo.

Notable for their strong opinions on social media, fans of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi came out in force to condemn the BBC’s caption.

In the Instagram comments, supporters called for followers to ‘unfollow’ and ‘report’ BBC Sport, with some labeling it the ‘worst sport account of all time’.

Cristiano Ronaldo, with 633 million Instagram followers, has a significant social media presence compared to the BBC’s 27.7 million followers on their most popular account.

Despite the backlash, some users defended the BBC, highlighting more critical global issues beyond a caption surrounding a football match.

Ronaldo’s mother, Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro, was also visibly upset after her son missed the penalty, highlighting the emotional intensity of the moment.

In a turn of events, Ronaldo managed to score during the penalty shoot-out, bringing relief to his team and fans alike.

Given the widespread criticism, the BBC’s attempt at humor was met with harsh disapproval, with many terming it ‘unprofessional’ and ‘shameful’.

Despite the tension, the focus did shift momentarily to tennis star Jabeur, who demonstrated skill in kick-ups in the same video that triggered the controversy involving Ronaldo.
