Cyclone ‘Remal’ Strengthens, Prompts Precautionary Measures in West Bengal and Bangladesh
Cyclone ‘Remal‘ has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm as it moves northward over the Bay of Bengal, prompting authorities in West Bengal and Bangladesh to take precautionary measures. Expected to make landfall near Sagar Island and Khepupara, close to Mongla port, the cyclone is forecasted to bring strong winds of up to 135 kmph.
Anticipated to hit coastal areas with extreme rainfall, especially in West Bengal districts like Nadia and Murshidabad, the looming cyclone has led to flight suspensions at Kolkata Airport. Operations will be halted for 21 hours, affecting both domestic and international flights.
In response to the cyclone, the Eastern and South Eastern Railways are cancelling several services in coastal districts of Sealdah South, Barasat-Hasnabad, and routes like the Kandari Express to mitigate risks. The impact is expected to extend to Balasore, Bhadrak, and Kendrapara districts of Odisha, as well as the hills of Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
The Indian Coast Guard has raised alerts at remote stations in Haldia and Paradip, warning against venturing into the Bay of Bengal. Pre-emptive measures include setting up a control room at Kolkata Police headquarters and deploying teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) across affected districts.
