Dallas Stars Faces Roster Decisions Heading into 2024 Offseason
The offseason has arrived for the Dallas Stars, and as general manager Jim Nill and head coach Pete DeBoer plan for the 2024-25 season, questions loom over the team’s roster construction.
With a solid core of players like Miro Heiskanen, Roope Hintz, and Jason Robertson secured for the future, attention turns to the supporting cast. The Stars currently have around $18.5 million in salary cap space, positioning them 18th among NHL teams for the upcoming season.
There are key players hitting free agency, including veterans like Joe Pavelski, Matt Duchene, Craig Smith, and Sam Steel. Defensive players Chris Tanev and Jani Hankanpaa are also set to enter free agency, along with goalie Scott Wedgewood.
Decisions need to be made regarding restricted free agents such as Ty Dellandrea, Nils Lundkvist, and Thomas Harley. These young talents have shown promise, but the Stars must determine their roles moving forward.
Thomas Harley has emerged as a standout defenseman, potentially becoming a priority for a new contract. Matej Blumel, Oskar Back, Scott Reedy, Fredrik Karlstrom, Matt Murray, Jared Rosburg, Gavin Bayreuther, and Derrick Pouliot are among the other players facing free agency.
Current roster stalwarts like Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn, Esa Lindell, and Ryan Suter provide veteran leadership, while emerging talents like Mason Marchment, Radek Faksa, and Evgenii Dadonov add depth to the squad. Young prospects like Mavrik Bourque and Wyatt Johnston offer promise for the future.
Goaltender Jake Oettinger‘s role in the team’s goaltending rotation is also a point of consideration as the Stars strategize for the upcoming season.
