Daniil Medvedev Advances to Fourth Round of US Open
Former champion Daniil Medvedev showcased his experience and skill in a robust performance against young Italian Flavio Cobolli at the US Open on Saturday. The fifth-seeded Medvedev triumphed with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, marking his entry into the fourth round for the sixth consecutive year.
Throughout the match, Medvedev faced a challenging test from the 22-year-old Cobolli, who received enthusiastic support from the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd. Despite going down a break twice in the third set, Medvedev demonstrated exceptional defensive skills and lifted his game at critical moments to deny Cobolli a spot in the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time.
Medvedev reflected on the match, stating, ‘It was a tough match. He was just a little bit up and down and at one point started playing much better on my serve than his.’ The match concluded when Medvedev won the last three games, sealing the victory on his second match point.
Next, Medvedev is set to face Portugal’s Nuno Borges, who he previously defeated at the same stage of the Australian Open earlier this year. Medvedev acknowledged Borges’s power and aggression, labeling him as ‘not an easy match’ due to his impressive play.
Following the early exits of renowned players Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, Medvedev remains the only former champion left in the men’s draw. The Russian player won the US Open title in 2021 by overcoming Djokovic in the final, preventing him from achieving a calendar Grand Slam.
In the 2024 season, Medvedev has reached the finals at the Australian Open and the semi-finals at Wimbledon but has not secured a title since winning the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome in May 2023. Entry to the quarter-finals could elevate him to a higher rank in the PIF ATP Rankings, as he aims for a spot in the prestigious event in Turin scheduled for November.
