Daryl Hannah Recalls Casting Journey in ‘Steel Magnolias’
In the decades since its release, the film «Steel Magnolias» has maintained its status as a quintessential piece of Southern cinema, celebrated for its portrayal of women’s relationships in a small Louisiana town. As the movie marks its 35th anniversary, actress Daryl Hannah has shared intriguing insights into the casting choices and her experience filming alongside iconic actresses.
«Steel Magnolias,» directed by Herbert Ross and adapted from the play by Robert Harling, follows the experiences of a group of Southern women navigating life’s challenges together. One of the standout characters, Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie, is famously portrayed by Julia Roberts, but Hannah recently revealed that she originally pursued that very role.
«Herbert Ross, the director, was adamant that I wouldn’t be right for Shelby,» Hannah recounted in an interview with PEOPLE. «He said, ‘No, absolutely not, I don’t see it,’ to which I pleaded, ‘Please let me.'» Eventually, Hannah was allowed to audition not for Shelby, but for the role of Annelle Dupuy-DeSoto, a character she ultimately embodied in the film.
Hannah went to great lengths to secure the part, transforming her appearance to convincingly portray the soft-spoken Annelle. «I styled my hair and wore my own glasses to audition,» she explained, noting the director’s surprise upon not recognizing her. «I love that feeling where you really turn into somebody else,» Hannah added.
The film is known for its strong ensemble cast, which alongside Roberts, included Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Tom Skerritt, and Dylan McDermott. Reflecting on her experience, Hannah described her co-stars as «fun, funny, and smart,» emphasizing the supportive dynamic among the women.
Julia Roberts’ performance as Shelby, inspired by Harling’s own sister Susan, who passed away due to complications from type 1 diabetes, earned her significant acclaim. The role brought Roberts her first Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress.
«Steel Magnolias» was one of Roberts’ earliest films. Daryl Hannah recalled Roberts’ inherent confidence, describing how the young actress boldly requested co-star Sam Shepard to write something for her. «She was always a very confident girl,» noted Hannah.
Beyond its star power, the movie is remembered for pioneering the depiction of women’s friendships on screen. Such portrayals were uncommon at the time, emphasizing women supporting each other through life’s myriad trials. The film premiered on November 5, 1989, and remains a beloved classic to this day.
