David Ajala, known for his roles in acclaimed series like Black Box and Supergirl and his appearances with the Royal Shakespeare Company, discussed his portrayal of Cleveland Booker on Star Trek: Discovery at MCM Comic Con London.

Ajala shared that his introduction to the Star Trek universe came through Sir Patrick Stewart, who directed him to watch the show, emphasizing its importance. He found the cartoon series Star Trek: Lower Decks particularly enjoyable due to its fun and rule-bending nature.

Joining Star Trek: Discovery in its third season alongside Blu del Barrio, Ajala reflected on the initial challenges of being a new addition to an established show but praised the welcoming cast and crew who made his experience enjoyable.

Describing the evolution of his character, Cleveland Booker, Ajala highlighted how Booker initially saw himself as in control of his fate, only to be drawn to a connection with Michael Burnham, played by Sonequa Martin-Green.

Working with the Maine Coon cats Leeu and Durban, who portray Grudge, Booker’s feline companion on the show, presented unique challenges that kept Ajala on his toes every day.

With the final season of Star Trek: Discovery set to air on Paramount+, Ajala expressed pride in the season’s adventurous storytelling that balances both familiar Star Trek themes and new ideas.

Looking ahead, Ajala hopes that the legacy of Star Trek: Discovery will be its commitment to diversity, both in representation and narrative storytelling, broadening the scope and impact of the franchise.
