Deepika Kumari Shines at Paris 2024 Olympics Archery
Deepika Kumari has put on an impressive show at the Paris 2024 Olympics, making her way into the round of 16 in the women’s individual archery event.
She started her journey with a tense match against Estonia’s Reena Parnat. After the five sets ended in a tie at 5-5, the competition went to a shoot-off. Despite both archers hitting the same score, Deepika won on the technicality of her arrow being closer to the center of the target.
Her next match against the Netherlands’ Quinty Roeffen was a lot smoother. Deepika quickly secured a victory with a score of 6-2, as her opponent shot off the target in the third set.
Next up for Deepika is a showdown with the World No. 13 Michelle Kroppen on August 3. She is not alone in the round of 16; Bhajan Kaur also reached this stage and will compete against Indonesia’s Diananda Choirunisa.
In contrast, Tarundeep Rai faced a tough exit in the men’s 1/32 elimination round. He lost to Tom Hall from Great Britain with a score of 6-4.
The archery format at the Olympics involves best-of-five sets, and each archer gets to shoot three arrows per set. The archer with the higher total score earns two points, while a tied set awards each archer one point.
Deepika, who is competing in her fourth Olympics, had a nail-biting start in the round of 64, initially trailing 5-3 but managing to come back to win against Estonia’s Reena Parnat.
With her shoot-off score being a 9, while Parnat scored an 8, Deepika secured her spot in the next round. In the round of 32, she demonstrated great skills with a strong performance that led to her victory over Quinty Roeffen.
On the women’s side, Bhajan Kaur also advanced after winning her matches against Indonesia’s Syifa Nurafifah Kamal and Poland’s Wioleta Myszor. However, Ankita Bhakat and Dhiraj Bommadevara were eliminated. Pravin Jadhav is set to kick off his individual campaign on Thursday.
