Delay in Vinesh Phogat’s CAS Verdict
Indian wrestling star Vinesh Phogat is anxiously waiting for a decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding her disqualification from the Olympics. The CAS has postponed the verdict to August 16, 2024, leaving fans and Vinesh in suspense.
Vinesh had a fantastic run leading up to the finals of the women’s 50kg freestyle event, winning three matches, including a remarkable victory over Japan’s Yui Susaki. However, her excitement turned to shock when she was disqualified for being 100 grams over the weight limit during the weigh-in.
To fight her disqualification, Vinesh quickly appealed to the CAS, asking for a joint silver medal with Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who she defeated but advanced to the final as a result of Vinesh’s disqualification.
After her heartbreaking setback, Vinesh expressed her exhaustion and stated that she didn’t have the strength to continue, especially after the intense preparations leading to the Games. months prior, she was also involved in protests against former Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who faced serious allegations.
Vinesh’s legal team, which includes several French lawyers, is working hard on her case, providing their services for free. They’ve been backed by senior lawyers like Harish Salve.
Many prominent athletes, including javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, have come out in support of Vinesh, urging the authorities to reconsider her case and award her a silver medal.
Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach showed understanding towards Vinesh’s situation but emphasized the importance of adhering to the rules set by the governing bodies.
On the other hand, United World Wrestling chief Nenad Lalovic mentioned that they had to follow the established rules without exceptions. With all eyes now on August 16, Vinesh’s future in this Olympic journey remains uncertain.
