Delhi Court Extends Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s Judicial Custody Amid Corruption Allegations
A Delhi court has further extended the judicial custody of Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, in relation to corruption charges brought forth by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The decision was made by the special Judge Sunena Sharma at the Rouse Avenue Courts. The CBI had sought an extension of Kejriwal’s custody, highlighting the necessity of his presence for the ongoing investigation process.
During the court proceedings, the CBI reiterated its stance on the importance of keeping Kejriwal in custody for the sake of justice and investigation integrity. Conversely, Kejriwal’s legal representation challenged the CBI’s application, pointing out the prolonged duration of the excise policy case and lack of cooperation during the interrogation process.
The case in question pertains to alleged irregularities in the 2021-22 excise policy in Delhi, involving modifications, favors granted to licensees, and unapproved extensions of L-1 licenses. Kejriwal’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate earlier in connection with money laundering allegations linked to the same case has complicated the legal proceedings.
Kejriwal, who has been vocal in defending his innocence and denying alleged involvement in the corruption and money laundering schemes, requested access to the materials collected against him during the judicial custody period. The court’s decision to extend his custody comes amidst a backdrop of intense scrutiny on the political landscape of Delhi and the ongoing legal battles faced by the AAP leadership.
