The residents of Delhi are currently facing a significant water shortage issue as the Delhi Jal Board, the city’s water regulatory authority, struggles to meet the increasing demand for water.

The Delhi Jal Board released a recent bulletin indicating that the city’s water production has reached 994 million gallons per day, with a production deficit primarily attributed to reduced raw water supply from the Yamuna canal.

The Wazirabad water treatment plant, responsible for water processing, reported a 8 MGD (million gallons per day) deficit due to a diminished supply of raw water from the Yamuna canal.

The water crisis has severely impacted regions across Delhi, prompting authorities to distribute water via tankers to support the affected population, as shown in recent videos circulating online.

In response to the crisis, the Delhi government has filed a plea with the Supreme Court, seeking intervention to have Haryana release excess water supplied by Himachal Pradesh to Delhi to help alleviate the current water shortage.

The ongoing water scarcity has also triggered concerns from organizations like the Housing and Land Rights Network, which urged the government to identify areas with a high concentration of homeless individuals to ensure access to water supply points.

The case filed by the Delhi government is scheduled to be heard by a vacation bench consisting of Justices P K Mishra and K V Viswanathan at the Supreme Court on Monday according to the court’s cause list.
