DeMarcus Lawrence Considered a Top Free Agency Target for Washington Commanders
Rising through the ranks from a four-win team, the Washington Commanders now boast a seven-win record before December, positioning themselves for a potential postseason appearance. This improvement makes Washington an attractive destination for free agents, and some experts are eyeing Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman, DeMarcus Lawrence, as a prime candidate for the Commanders.
Bleacher Report writer Kristopher Knox suggests that Lawrence could greatly benefit the Commanders with his ability to disrupt quarterbacks and running plays, which is crucial as Washington ranks 30th in yards per carry allowed. Knox notes, «Lawrence would be an ideal fit for the Commanders because of his ability to pressure quarterbacks and blow up running plays.»
The presence of head coach Dan Quinn at Washington strengthens this proposition. Quinn, who previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Cowboys, knows well how to optimize Lawrence’s performance. Furthermore, Washington might see a reunion with former Cowboys Dorance Armstrong and potentially Dante Fowler Jr., though Fowler is entering free agency.
On Sunday, the Commanders will face off against Lawrence’s Cowboys at NorthWest Stadium at 1 p.m. ET. As Washington looks to strengthen their defensive front, Lawrence could be a vital addition, replacing Fowler or adding depth.
Despite the Commanders’ interest, it’s essential to note the Cowboys’ struggles this season, with a record currently standing at 3-6. With playoffs looking unlikely, the Cowboys may witness significant changes by the season’s end, with the potential departure of veterans like Lawrence.
Lawrence, who is approaching free agency next spring, has attracted attention given his consistent performance and recent accolades, including back-to-back Pro Bowls. In four games this season, before injury, he managed 14 tackles, four tackles for loss, three sacks, several quarterback pressures, and forced a fumble.
Should the Cowboys choose to release Lawrence to free agency, Washington and the Detroit Lions have emerged as potential suitors. For Detroit, Lawrence would complement star edge-rusher Aidan Hutchinson, with the Lions eager to bolster their pass rush.
Meanwhile, Washington’s defense, which includes Lawrence’s former understudies Armstrong and Fowler, has been a pleasant surprise this season. However, with free agency looming for Fowler and Clelin Ferrell in 2025, the Commanders are evaluating long-term defensive enhancements.
