A total of 271 runners from the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) are gearing up to participate in the 2024 Comrades Marathon, slated for Sunday, 09 June 2024, in KwaZulu-Natal. The race, marking the 97th edition and the 49th Up Run, will cover a challenging 85.91km route from Durban City Hall to the HollywoodBets Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg.
DCS officials have dedicated months to rigorous training, preparing themselves for the demanding marathon. Well-known for their stamina and endurance, these correctional athletes are set to showcase their strength and resilience during this world-class event, donning the DCS Athletics Club colors.
Among the top contenders are runners like Mbusiseni Yaka and Ziphindile Dlamini, aiming to beat their previous finish times of 06:55 and 08:41, respectively. Seasoned participants like Vitalis Poli (aged 59) and Mabatalale Ntshehi (aged 60) are eager to add more Comrades Marathon medals to their collection.
As part of their support system, the DCS will have an official waterpoint at the 74-kilometer mark, with volunteers and their families stationed along the route to assist the runners. Additionally, the department’s Arts and Craft items, created by offenders in line with the Self-Sufficiency and Sustainability Framework, will be on display at the Comrades Marathon Expo from 06 to 08 June 2024.
The DCS officials’ choir has been invited to perform at the expo’s official opening for the second consecutive year, highlighting their musical talents. A send-off gala dinner at the Karridene Protea Hotel on 07 June 2024 will feature a keynote address by National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale.
Participation in the Comrades Marathon underscores the DCS’s commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle, community engagement, and national pride, showcasing the department’s dedication to well-being and physical fitness.
