Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya Recommended for Chief Justice Position by JSC
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has put forward its recommendation for current Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya to assume the position of Chief Justice, following the planned retirement of Chief Justice Raymond Zondo in August. President Cyril Ramaphosa, in February, proposed Maya as the primary contender for the role, subject to the JSC’s consultation.
Prior to this nomination, Maya had previously been the JSC’s favored choice for the role of Chief Justice when she served as the President of the Supreme Court of Appeal. However, the final decision at that time fell to the president, who ultimately appointed Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo instead.
As the solitary nominee for the position this time around, Maya is set to undergo an interview with the JSC before their advice is given to President Cyril Ramaphosa. While the ultimate decision rests with the president, given his previous support and assuming Maya secures the JSC’s endorsement once more, she stands as a formidable candidate for the role.
