In a recent roster adjustment, the Detroit Lions have made strategic changes to their practice squad by swapping safeties. The team has opted to bring in Kaevon Merriweather while releasing Erick Hallett. This move aims to bolster the Lions’ defensive lineup, particularly on special teams.

Kaevon Merriweather joins the Lions with a robust background in special teams. He previously played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he led in special teams tackles as an undrafted rookie in 2023. The addition of Merriweather is seen as a significant step, as he brings a wealth of NFL experience to the Lions’ practice squad.

Merriweather is a native of the Detroit area, having graduated from Belleville High School. He also shares a collegiate connection with Lions tight end Sam LaPorta, both having played for the University of Iowa.

This roster change comes at a critical time for the Lions, as they are currently without the services of Ifeatu Melifonwu, who is on injured reserve. Melifonwu is expected to remain sidelined for at least four more weeks, creating a pressing need for depth in the safety position.

Meanwhile, the Lions have also activated Brodric Martin from injured reserve to add more depth to their defensive line. However, the coaching staff has indicated that they are not in a hurry to push Martin into action. Despite being included on the main roster, Martin is still considered to be in a developmental phase, as stated by team officials.
