Detroit Lions Sign Linebacker David Long Jr. to Practice Squad
Former Miami Dolphins linebacker, David Long Jr., has been signed to the Detroit Lions practice squad, according to an announcement made on Monday. This move comes as the Lions seek to bolster their linebacker position after placing starting linebacker Alex Anzalone on injured reserve due to a broken forearm sustained during a recent victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Lions, tied for the best record in the NFL at 9-1, routed the Jaguars 52-6 in their last game.
The 2024 NFL season has been challenging for Long, who began the year as a starter for the Dolphins, playing in their first six games. However, he lost his starting spot to veteran Anthony Walker Jr. and subsequently participated only in special teams for two games before being waived on November 13th, following Miami’s acquisition of linebacker Tyrel Dodson from the Seattle Seahawks.
Despite going unclaimed on waivers, Long found a new opportunity with the Detroit Lions. Previously, Long was a prominent player for Miami in the 2023 season, leading the team with 113 tackles, including two for loss. However, his performance seemingly declined this year, as noted by Pro Football Focus, which ranked him last among 82 linebackers graded this season.
Anthony Weaver, the defensive coordinator of the Dolphins, commented on Long’s waiver, stating, «I think that was just a team decision. Obviously we have a tremendous amount of love and respect for Dave. He is a starting-caliber NFL backer and at this particular time we know we chose to go with Walk, so it was probably the best move for just all parties involved. It gives him a chance to continue his NFL career and go flourish elsewhere but incredibly grateful for his time here for sure.»
The Detroit Lions are preparing for their upcoming game against the Indianapolis Colts and have activated Ifeatu Melifonwu to help manage their defensive lineup adjustment.
