Dick Van Dyke Makes History by Winning Daytime Emmy at 98
Dick Van Dyke, the legendary actor and comedian, made history by winning the 2024 Daytime Emmy award at the age of 98 for his role as the amnesiac Timothy Robicheaux on Peacock‘s ‘Days of Our Lives.’
Van Dyke expressed his disbelief at receiving the award, joking about feeling like a spy from nighttime television and reflecting on his 80-year career in the industry.
Accompanied by his wife Arlene, Van Dyke graciously accepted the award with a standing ovation, solidifying his place as the oldest Daytime Emmy winner in history.
Notable producer Norman Lear, who received his final Primetime Emmy nomination at age 100, was also acknowledged during the ceremony.
Van Dyke, a seasoned industry veteran, has previously won four Primetime Emmys, three of which were for his iconic comedy series ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show.’
The Daytime Emmy win for Van Dyke was a surprise victory over last year’s winner, Alley Mills, as well as other notable nominees such as Guy Pearce, Linden Ashby, and Ashley Jones.
Van Dyke’s accomplishment follows his significant contribution to the entertainment industry spanning several decades.
In other awards, ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show‘ secured its fourth consecutive victory in the daytime show category, with Clarkson personally acknowledging the positive impact of moving the show from Los Angeles to New York.
Supporting acting honors went to Robert Gossett of ‘General Hospital‘ and Courtney Hope of ‘The Young and the Restless’ for their outstanding performances in their respective roles.
Melody Thomas Scott, recognized for her portrayal of Nikki Newman on ‘The Young and the Restless’ for 45 years, along with her husband and producer Edward Scott, were both honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
The event held at The Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles also featured wins in directing and writing for ‘General Hospital.’
Culinary star Ina Garten‘s ‘Be My Guest‘ on Food Network took home the best culinary series award during the ceremony.
The prestigious 51st annual Daytime Emmys marked a return to its regular schedule following disruptions from last year’s Hollywood strikes.
